Sciatica and Back Pain
Sciatica
and back pain are the most common complaints we see at Between Heaven and Earth Health Center. Unfortunately, most people will experience this debilitating pain sometime in their lifes. A back attack happens suddenly, often from strain - lifting something and twisting at the same time, or not using the legs when lifting something heavy. The back muscles then tightens up and goes into spasms in order to protect the spine. There are many other causes. Emotional stress is a big one. It can put the muscles in tension that pull on the vertebrae. Overweight is another "biggy". It is calculated, that the back muscles must exert the force of 50 pounds to counterbalance a 10 pound paunch in front of the spine. Sometimes there is a herniation of one or more of the discs of the lumbar or sacral regions. It is very painful and often gives rise to sciatica. Sciatica pain often goes from the buttocks to the ankle. When it is not caused by a herniated disc, it can come from tightened muscles attached to the hip. Tip: Don't put your wallet in your back pocket - that can often be the cause of back pain! Acupuncture is great for back pain and sciatica! Results vary; some people get relief after the first treatment, others take a little more. It also depends on life style and nutrition. Stress is a big culprit too. Rest is important. It can help to put ice on for 20 minutes, then heat for another 20 minutes and then ice again, alternating. The ice numbs the pain and reduces the inflammation, while the heat opens the veins and the arteries to speed the blood flow to and from constricted muscles. When lying in bed, place a pillow under the knees to relieve the lower back. Good nutrition is important. Fresh, raw (preferably organic) fruits and vegetables are a must! Supplements rich in antioxidants are very important as well. Drinking a glass of fresh, raw potato juice, mixed with beet, carrot and/or celery juice can help back sufferers. Recommended natural herbs are: White Willow Bark (containing Salicylate, the natural aspirin), Burdock, Comfrey, Juniper, Slippery Elm and Valerian. It is very important to strengthen the abdominal muscles! Weak stomach muscles = weak and sore back. Do gentle exercises to start with and be very careful with your form and posture. Remember: Small corrections can do wonders.
